Cougar's Open the 2016 Season Hosting BGA
The 2016 Goodpasture Cougar football team will see their tough off-season work put to the test as they host BGA in the opening game of the 2016 season. Last week was a great night for all levels of football at Goodpasture as every team won their match-up in the 2nd annual Cougar Jamboree. Tonight, however, the game and outcome "counts" as the high school team plays traditional cross-town rival BGA. The night will also feature our school's annual "Back-2-Scchool Bash" with many activities all over campus. Please come support these young men, as well as the cheerleaders and our band as we kickoff the 2016 season. If you cannot make it to the game, here is a link for a live broadcast. (The school receives 50% of the broadcast cost) scores.nfhsnetwork.com/football/boys/game/6958634

Cougars Fall to Mustangs
On a wet, cool fall evening, the Cougars could not overcome miscues and fell to their crosstown rival by a 45-7 score. The Cougar defense held the Mustangs to the lowest yardage total of any team this season, but could not overcome the fact that all but 3 Mustang possessions began in Cougar territory. The Cougars offense however could not muster enough offense to flip the field position which kept the Cougars backed up. The Cougars finally struck paydirt in the 4th quarter with 4:41 on the clock, but the game was out of reach. The Mustangs proceeded to pour salt in the wound by adding a late score with seconds remaining before the Cougars took a knee after an onside kick attempt to end the game. The Cougars now head into their open week before hosting Stratford on Senior Night on October 9.

Cougars Come Up Short in Homecoming Night Game
On a near perfect Homecoming night in a weekend that included the school's 50th year celebration, the Cougar's bid for a victory on the football field came up short as they fell to the visiting White's Creek Cobras 28-6. Each team scored on their 1st possession, but failed on the PAT to leave the score knotted at 6-6. The Cobras 3rd possession yielded them a lead 14-6, but the Cougars would move quickly to a 1st & goal at the Cobra 6-yard line, but were turned away with less than 2 minutes to go before halftime. On their 2nd play, they would break a momentum shifting 80-yard run just before intermission. The score would not change in the 2nd half until the Cobras added a late score for their final margin of victory. The Cougars now turn their attention to next Friday night when they travel to annual cross-town Lipscomb at 7:00.

Cougars Fall to FRA in Week 4
In a renewal of old crosstown rivals, the Cougars fell to the Panthers by a 47-7 margin. The high moment of the night, came on a Julius Elders 12-yard run to cut the FRA lead to 14-7, but that was as close as the home standing team could get as the Panthers continued to press their advantage and keep their season record perfect at 4-0. The Cougars dropped to 0-4 and now turn their attention to Homecoming week and region opponent Whites Creek. The week, which marks the school's 50th year and celebration at the Gala on Saturday night, will feature Spirit dress-up days, the Homecoming parade on Friday afternoon, pre-game festivities, and then kickoff of the region game at 7:00. |
Cougars Lose to Greenbrier in week 3
On a night that featured much improvement by the Cougars, the team fell to Greenbrier by a score of 34-7. The Bobcats took the ball and marched for an early score. The Cougars struck on a big play from Dylan Brooks to Jacob Crocker to put the Cougars deep in Bobcat territory, but the Cougars could not capitalize as the Bobcats would drive for their 2nd score and take command. The Cougars made great improvement on the offensive side of the ball, but could not overcome 3 costly turnovers on the night. The Cougars did set season high marks for the season in total yards and passing yards, but could only find the end zone once on a Sam McCauley run in the 4th quarter. Reid Murdock's 1st career extra point rounded out the scoring for the Cougars. The team continues to work hard and attempt to improve each week and is thankful for the outstanding support from so many as illustrated by the awesome crowd after the game as they sang the alma mater and met in the end zone. They Cougars will host FRA next Friday night, September 11 at 7:00.

Cougars Drop Season Opener
The Cougars opening game at BGA, obviously did not go as planned for the team or its fans. The Cougars stopped the Wildcats on their 1st possession to take over near midfield only to turn the ball over on their 1st offensive play. The Wildcats wasted little time in taking the momentum and the lead. The Wildcats used big plays all night on offense and Cougar turnovers on defense to defeat the Cougars 46-0. The Wildcats had 7 plays that totaled 322 yards, while their other 35 plays picked up only 68 yards on the night. The Cougars continued to fight hard all night, but could never overcome the early hole they put themselves in. The Cougars will now put the loss behind them as they prepare for the home opener next Friday, August 28 against White House.

7/8 Grade Pick Up Season's 1st Win
The 7/8 Football team picked up their 1st win of the season on Thursday August 20, with an exciting 8-0 win over FRA. The Cougars were their own worst enemy in the early going as several potentially huge plays in the 1st half were negated by penalty, including a 40-yard pass from Cooper Pennington to Cole Dotson. The biggest play of the defensive struggle was a Brendan Jones interception that was returned 40 yards to put the Cougars inside the FRA 20. Three Trey White carries moved the ball to the 2-yard line where Peyton Oliphant hit paydirt and Gabe Corley's conversion gave the Cougars an 8-0 lead that would eventually be the final score of the game. Logan Capps led the defensive effort with 10 tackles from his defensive tackle spot. The Junior Cougars next action will Thursday August 27 at home against Ezell-Harding.
